Video installation with sculptural sound object, performance and photographs
2019 - 2020
Black Diamond Coal Mine, California
On the solubility of gold is a video and sound performance involving multiple iterations of a found piece of lignite (a type of low grade coal). The video shows the lignite artifact as a digital replica in augmented reality on a waste pile outside of the coal mine and with a physically constructed virtual reality backdrop. The work explores digital alchemy and the subsequent transformations the artifact endures as an analogy for environmental estrangement through geological extraction.
